Snow and sidewalk

Snow and sidewalk

Canada/Montreal, Snow and sidewalk!

In Montreal, keeping sidewalks clear and safe in winter is a duty of the municipality, but in some places this is done by households.

Credit for the concept that municipalities should remove snow from public roadways usually goes to Edward N. Hines, a celebrated early 20th century transportation thinker who also was the first to put a painted center line stripe on an automobile-era road.

The stages involved in snow removal operations in Montreal:
1. Salt and gravel spreading as soon as the sidewalks become slippery;
2. Plowing as soon as there is 2.5 cm of snow on the ground;
3. Loading as soon as there is 10 to 15 cm of snow on the ground.
These operations are carried out continuously until the sidewalks are cleared and safe.

Château Gohier

Château Gohier
Château Gohier is a part of several residences that were made by Édouard Gohier, the first mayor of Ville de Saint-Laurent in 1916.
He was a successful businessman and promoter, actively participating in the territorial and economic development of Saint-Laurent. In 1910, Édouard Gohier acquired land in the northwestern part of Cape Saint-Jacques.
He then planned to build several residences there for members of his family. However, his project was only partially realized, as evidenced by the unfinished appearance of Château Gohier, a building he would never have inhabited.
The owners have changed during the years.
The main use is restaurant now.

Hafezieh!

Hafezieh

Iran/Shiraz, Hafezieh!

Hafez was a Persian poet. His collected works are regarded by many Iranians as a pinnacle of Persian literature and are often found in the homes of people in the Persian-speaking world, who learn his poems by heart and still use them as proverbs and sayings.

Many Iranian composers have composed pieces inspired by or based upon Hafez's poems and many Iranian singers have performed on several poems such as master Mohammad-Reza Shajarian.

His current mausoleum, the Hafezieh, was designed by André Godard, a French archaeologist and architect, in the late 1930s, and the tomb is raised up on a dais amidst rose gardens, water channels, and sour orange trees in Shiraz.

October 12th is the national day of Hafez in Iranian calendar.

Sour cherry

Canada/Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Sour cherry!
Sour cherry is a species in the subgenus cherries, native to southwest Asia and much of Europe. It is closely related to the sweet cherry, but has a fruit that is more acidic.
It is thought to have originated in the Iranian Plateau or Eastern Europe.
They were also extremely popular with Persians and the Romans who introduced them into Britain long before the 1st century AD. The fruit remains popular in modern-day Iran.
Sour cherries are used in cooking including cakes, tarts, and pies.
In Iran, Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, sour cherries are especially prized for making spoon sweets by slowly boiling pitted sour cherries and sugar; the syrup thereof is used for Sharbat-e Albalou, Vişne şurubu or Vyssináda, a beverage made by diluting the syrup with ice-cold water.
Sour cherries or sour cherry syrup are used in liqueurs and drinks too.

Montreal's Sunset!

Canada/Montreal, Sunset!
The Sun is setting behind the river.
Sundown or sunset is the daily disappearance of the Sun below the horizon due to Earth's rotation.
The time of sundown is defined in astronomy as the moment when the upper limb of the Sun disappears below the horizon.
Sunset is distinct from twilight.

The first part of sunset begins once the Sun has disappeared below the horizon, and continues until it descends to 6 degrees below the horizon.

SABZEH & Frozen river!

Canada/Montreal, SABZEH & Frozen river!
Frozen river on the 13th day of spring!
Ça va bien aller!
It's going to be fine!

Sabzeh is a plant in which some legumes are grown and it is one of the signs of Nowruz and the components of the Haft-seen. Sabzeh is grown from wheat germ, barley and lentils.
It is traditionally displayed at Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, which is celebrated on the day of the vernal equinox, marking the beginning of spring on the Northern Hemisphere.
Some believe that the presence of Sabzeh in the Haft-seen brings freshness and happines throughout the year. It is customary to keep Sabzeh until the thirteenth day of Nowruz, which is called the Seezadeh-bi-dar, and to throw away the evils and ambiguities with it.

A skier is looking at a snowman!

Canada/Montreal, A skier is looking at a snowman!

A snowman is an anthropomorphic snow sculpture often built in regions with sufficient snowfall. In many places, typical snowmen consist of three large snowballs of different sizes with some additional accoutrements for facial and other features. Due to the sculptability of snow, there is also a wide variety of other styles. Common accessories include branches for arms and a rudimentary smiley face, with a carrot used for a nose. Clothing, such as a hat or scarf, may be included. Low cost and availability are the common issues, since snowmen are usually abandoned to the elements once completed.
