Canada/Montreal, The Sir George Etienne Cartier Monument!
The Monument to George-Étienne
Cartier is a national monument erected in 1919 located
opposite Jeanne-Mance Park , east of Mount
Royal in Montreal . He was raised by a committee which
obtained subscriptions in all parts of the British Empire as well as
in the United States. At the time of its construction, it was therefore of
international as well as national significance.
It was commissioned to celebrate the hundredth
birthday of George-Étienne Cartier in 1914 but was delayed because of
the war . The inauguration ceremony took place on September 6,
1919. The monument was unveiled by King George V himself of
the castle of Balmoral by the press of an electric button.
Sir George-Étienne Cartier, 1st Baronet, was
a Canadian statesman and Father of Confederation.
Top 30 meters, it consists of 18
bronze figures placed with granite blocks. It is the work of the
sculptor George William Hill.
The monument is topped by a winged Goddess
of Liberty.
